Introduction:
Karen Coulman, who is a dietician and researcher for Bristol University, is looking for parent carers of young people aged 14+ with Learning Disabilities, to participate in the following piece of work:
Background: We know that individuals with learning disabilities are more likely to carry extra weight (e.g. being overweight or living with obesity) than the general population. Carrying extra weight can increase the risk of physical and mental health problems like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and low mood. We know that people with learning disabilities are also less likely to be able to access help to support them with a healthy lifestyle and achieving a healthier weight.
What am I doing? I’m planning a research project application to work out ways that we can help people with learning disabilities to get better access to support for healthy lifestyles and healthier weight.
What am I asking for help with? I’d really like to speak with parent carers of teenagers and adults with learning disabilities (aged 14+) to inform the research that I propose within the research project application. The deadline for the application is the end of May, so I’d really like to speak with people in the next couple of weeks ideally.
What would it involve? One or two informal and friendly conversations with me over telephone or Zoom/Teams, and possibly reviewing a couple of short sections of the application (if wanted). As a thank you for people’s time in helping me, I can offer individuals a shopping voucher at a rate of £25 per hour.
If the research is successfully funded there would be an opportunity to contribute to the project longer-term if interested.
